Organised by NHS England, ecdp and Cheshire Centre for Independent Living, the organisers joined forces to bring together a new Personal Health Budget service development programme. A series of roadshows commissioned for senior managers of Disabled People's User Led Organisations, the two day event was held in the Innovation Centre's main room, the Dalton Room. Emma Woolfall from the Cheshire Centre for Independent Living was really pleased with the choice of venue. Emma commented: "The Innovation Centre was a perfect backdrop for our delegates. As we had a number of wheel chair users, the spaces at UMIC were all very well suited and perfectly accessible. The main Dalton Room was next to the Street where registration and catering was served and it all linked in easy reach of the breakout spaces. It was perfect for our delegates to move around and manage on the day. Though there is isn't direct car parking on site; the Grafton Street multi- storey car park was easy to access from the venue. The event went really smoothly and we were really pleased with the two days." Child Poverty Action Group returns for the 3rd year In September, Child Poverty Action Group returns for their 3rd annual Welfare Rights Conference at the Innovation Centre. A pinnacle event in their calendar, the day attracts a large number of welfare rights workers, advisors and policy workers from across the country, on topics pertinent to social security and welfare rights. Through a mixture of talks, question and answer sessions and in- depth workshops, the Conference aims to inform, analyse and spark discussion about pressing welfare rights issues, providing invaluable opportunities for delegates to network and share ideas. Historically held in London, in 2013 they held their first Northern event to engage a broader audience. With its excellent travel links and central location, Manchester was the natural choice and UMIC offered the best combination of convenience, service and cost amongst a very competitive field. Fast forward two years, and the Northern Conference at UMIC is now a firm and favourite fixture, selling out months in advance. Organiser, Sebastian Clark said: "Our success has been aided - in no small part - by the excellent service and facilities at UMIC, with truly excellent feedback from all of our delegates. Needless to say, we look forward to returning to the UMIC this September!" Young Entrepreneurs Scheme turns 20 The Young Entrepreneurs Scheme (YES) is a family of innovative competitions developed to raise awareness of the commercialisation of ideas among researchers. YES currently includes four major competitions: Biotechnology YES, Digital Futures YES, Engineering YES and Environment YES. With the aim of encouraging an entrepreneurial culture in the UK postgraduate and postdoctoral community, YES helps participants to realise their entrepreneurial capabilities and get hands-on experience in business planning, intellectual property, managing finance and marketing strategies. Participants attend a series of workshops featuring talks from leading industry figures and past participants, inspiring them to explore their career development opportunities and strategies. YES requires researchers to work in groups to produce a business plan for a hypothetical company, which is later presented to a panel taking on the role of equity investors. The winning team receives a cash prize. UMIC has hosted a workshop since 2007. Organiser team member Tracey Hassall-Jones said: "From the initial enquiry to the actual event, the Events Team are always extremely helpful in meeting our needs and participants enjoy both the facilities and the food!" YES is delivered through partnerships between the University of Nottingham's Haydn Green Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the competition's sponsors. 2015 sees YES enter its 20th year with 4,673 researchers having taken part in the various YES competitions since its inception. Sponsors include the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), GSK, the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), the Medical Research Council (MRC), Syngenta and Unilever. Registration for the upcoming YES 2015 competitions has now closed but with the first workshop taking place in October at UMIC as part of Biotechnology YES, anyone interested in coming on board as a speaker, mentor or sponsor should contact Tracey Hassall-Jones: tracey@biotechnologyyes.co.uk or visit: www.biotechnologyyes.co.uk Keep in touch If you have any comments or would like to come and see the spaces, please contact us on the number below or email: events@umic.co.uk – we'd do love to hear from you and support you further.
