UMIP INITIATIVES 5 UMIC ® UMIP ® UMI 3 IQuBit and Student Enterprise Update… Following the graduation of the 2014 student entrepreneurs, IQuBit welcomed four new student entrepreneurs on to the programme. They have been paired with mentors within the TiE network and continue to successfully grow their enterprises. Erol Chioasca, a PhD student from the School of Computer Science has developed TRAM, an innovative software programme and disruptive technology which allows a faster, cheaper, more consistent and accurate business analysis service. His software analyses problems within businesses 7 times faster than traditional business analysts and is a smart service which overcomes manual processes. His software currently has a patent filed under PCT application and was voted "Best student tool" in the Automated Software Engineering conference in Silicon Valley, 2013. Taskeel Khan, a graduate from the School of Pharmacy has recently set up CDSmart Ltd - the CDSmart software digitalises the data entry of controlled drugs in pharmacies. These drugs are meticulously regulated and require specific guidelines to document and store. Discrepancies may result in disciplinary and legal action. Current manual processes of recording controlled drugs are time-consuming, implicated by illegibility and errors, and involve costly registers. CDSmart allows pharmacists to: free up time for dispensing, reduce the amount of money wasted on paper based registers, and reduce time wasted away from the dispensary to document extensive data and comply with the legislation. Ryan Shoesmith, a final year student from the School of Psychology, is developing The Little Missing Piece Co. a Social Enterprise that provides advice, support and guidance for the autistic community through information, products and services on one accessible platform. The Little Missing Piece Co. will provide carers with expert clinical advice for at home behavioural support solutions, bridging the gap between industry knowledge for parents during long diagnostic waiting times and making home life a little easier for all. It supports parents via an online interactive platform offering clinical information, forums and products and services applicable by location. Avinash Mehrotra, an MBA student from the Business School is developing AdaptiveSchool.com, a community based adaptive learning platform with 3 unique features: Social - supporting peer to peer learning by connecting students all over the world with similar learning needs. Students can share information on their profile as well as solve the same question simultaneously in online classrooms where they can discuss solutions in chat mode; Adaptive - the platform runs on statistical algorithms which adapt to the user's unique learning needs introducing questions according to student's knowledge level; Performance analytics – a unique brain map feature measures student's performance providing key insights on areas of strength, improvement and global/local rankings. IQuBit continues to accept student applications for the programme. Whether you're interested in being your own boss or hoping to land your dream graduate job, the IQuBit program can provide you with the skills and know-how to launch a business, develop your employability skills and develop your business idea. Social Enterprise Update… This year has seen funding of over £82,000 awarded across the campus to support entrepreneurs with social ventures that we believe are well on their way to becoming scalable businesses. Through our dedicated social enterprise workshops, events and support sessions we have engaged with over 250 individuals. A key achievement this year for our social enterprise team, consisting of UMIP and Manchester Enterprise Centre (MEC), was recognition for their commitment to supporting and developing social entrepreneurs at the UnLtd SEEChange National Conference in June. The team were proud to retain the top accolade of Higher Education Institute of the Year Award on behalf of the University and a number of our social enterprises also won awards (see here for further details). Dr Laura Etchells, UMIP's Enterprise and Business Development Manager, comments: "We are delighted to have retained our HEI of the Year award status which demonstrates our dedication to supporting our staff and students in creating new enterprises for societal benefit. We look forward to working with our entrepreneurs further and supporting them as they begin to grow and scale their activity." Our main focus of activity as we move into the new academic year will be to assist and support these entrepreneurs through the next stage of development connecting them to mentors, helping them to shape their growth strategies and brokering connections and partnerships across the social investment sector. To facilitate this we will be seeking to continue to be an UnLtd SEEChange partner and secure Scale and Growth funding into 2016. If you have the motivation and drive to make a difference, please contact us to find out more about the support available to you. laura.etchells@umip.com; ellie.buckley@umip.com
