AWARDS UMIC ® UMIP ® UMI 3 SOCIAL BUSINESS SPIN-OUT, HISOLAR LTD FINALISTS AT NEW ENERGY AWARD 2015 HiSolar has developed an innovative, solar powered LED lighting unit that combines with both vernacular and high tech natural lighting systems (light pipes). The combination provides a hybrid day-lighting and night-time, off-grid electric lighting unit thereby reducing both electricity consumption and CO2 emissions. Dr Sibley comments: "We are delighted to be finalists in our category at the New Energy Award 2015 – it's tremendous recognition as to what we have achieved so far." The HiSolar system is applicable to both the world heritage and the new build construction sectors. For the UK social housing market, the system provides high quality daylight and LED night light to windowless spaces in new build houses - resulting in lower installation costs, lower running costs for tenants and provides the builder/housing association with an enhanced ecological design. Daylight factor is expected to become a compulsory requirement in the BRE code for sustainable homes making the system very attractive to housing providers. Other potential applications include housing for older residents, schools, hospitals, supermarket and public transport stations. For hammams (public bathhouses) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) the system is affordable, easy to install and non-visually intrusive providing good quality daylight with up to 8 hours of continuous lighting each night. A third of bathhouses in Fez, Morocco, have closed since the 1990s due to increased energy costs. The system helps reduce electricity consumption and sustain economic viability as well as enhance the building users' wellbeing. Dr Sibley is currently finalising the design prior to obtaining CE certification and has firm orders for 12 units in Morocco and 30 hybrid light pipe units in Saudi Arabia.
