UMIC ® UMIP ® UMI 3 14 We describe such outputs - non- patentable Intellectual Property (usually copyright) in the form of a market-ready "product" that can be licensed "at scale" - as "Express IP. Over the last three years we have explored the large untapped resource of copyright materials (software, text and images) and research materials created at the University within the following areas: > Software – standalone software and web-based tools > Clinical Outcome Assessments (COAs) – Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs), Clinical Reported Outcomes (ClinROs), Observer Reported Outcomes (ObsROs) and other tools > Images – micrographs, illustrations and photographs from any field of research > Research Materials – antibodies, cell lines, plasmids, animal models, enzymes/biocatalysts, compound libraries, etc Our aim is to connect your product with a customer or licensee as quickly and efficiently as possible. Where possible we will try to identify a licensee that can act as a distributor and take care of all marketing activity in return for a share of any revenues. We have already licensed software, PROs and research reagents in this way. In other cases the best way to help disseminate Express IP, particularly for research purposes is via our online shop Click2Go. Click2Go We launched Click2Go in February 2014 as a means of connecting people to the University's research outputs. In the last 12 months the Click2Go portfolio has expanded to over 60 items, with COA, image and research material categories recently added and to complement our well-established software portfolio. To-date we have concluded over 100 licences (mainly software and COAs), have sold more than 1500 copies of The Academic Phrasebank as well as handling image licensing and payments for The Manchester Museum and The Whitworth. Other Activity In January 2015 we welcomed Dr. Melanie Hardman from Ximbio (the research reagent commercialisation brand of CRT) to the University. Ximbio offer a research reagent sourcing and distribution service to technology transfer offices around the country and we hope to conclude an agreement before the end of the academic year. This month Dr. Ed Maughfling spoke at the PraxisUnico annual conference in the Express IP Special Interest Group alongside Dr. Melanie Hardman (Ximbio / CRT), Dr Marina Santilli (UCLB) and Dr. David Churchman (ISIS Outcomes). We anticipate that Express IP will become more important for UK universities in the coming years for knowledge exchange, impact and commercialisation. More information on this seminar can be found here. Contact If you have developed Express IP that you wish to discuss with us then please contact our IP Scouting Team. If you want to know more about Express IP or would like someone to come and talk at your research meeting, seminar or away day then please email express@umip.com or call Ed Maughfling on 0161 606 7213. EXPRESS IP UPDATE Whilst we mainly help to commercialise IP in the form of patentable inventions other research outputs still have great value to either academic and clinical researchers or in the commercial world.
