EPS INVESTMENT EVENT HELD TO PROMOTE IP GROUP & UMI3 £5M PROOF-OF-PRINCIPLE SPIN-OUT 'FUND' In November, researchers and academics from the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS) were invited to attend an investment showcase event in our Innovation Centre organised by IP Group Business Development Director, Dr Cassie Doherty. Speakers included, John McArthur, CEO of Tracsis plc, Charles Winward, non-executive director of Xeros Ltd, Professor Ben Varcoe, School of Physics and Astronomy, The University of Leeds and Dr Mark Reilly, Head of Physical Sciences, IP Group plc. The aim of the event was to raise awareness of the fund and to introduce our EPS research community to the more commercial aspects of their research outputs though a series of presentations by spin-out entrepreneurs from early-stage projects and AIM listed companies from the IP Group portfolio. Dr Rich Ferrie, Director of Operations, UMIP, commented: "We thank our colleagues at IP Group for organising this interesting event and for sharing some truly inspirational spin-out case studies. We look forward to developing our partnership with IPG and ensuring that Manchester projects benefit from the new funding arrangements for spin-outs." CALLING ALL UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER STAFF… WE WANT YOUR EXPRESS IP! Historically, UMIP has mainly supported University researchers that generate patentable, technology-based IP. However we are increasingly seeing valuable IP created across a broad spectrum of job roles that promises to return revenue to creator and University alike. At UMIP we define Express IP as IP that exists in the form of a ready-to-market product that lends itself to "at-scale" transaction – for example through licensing to preferred market partners or via online web portals. Typical examples may be software, curricula, clinical questionnaires, images (all copyright IP) or research reagents (e.g. cell lines & antibodies). If you think that you may have some Express IP and would like to discuss it with someone please contact your UMIP contact from our IP Scouting Team. Or for a more general discussion about Express IP please email express@umip.com or call 0161 606 7213. Dr Mark Reilly, Head of Physical Sciences, IP Group, commented: "We've heard some impressive stories today of academic innovations that have formed the basis of great businesses. Hopefully these will serve to inspire, and we look forward to helping to create the next generation of successful spinouts here in Manchester." More about the Proof-ofPrinciple funding facility… Earlier this year, IP Group plc and UMI3 Ltd and created a £5M Proof-of-Principle funding facility for new technology projects intended for commercialisation through spin-out companies. Funding areas cover the majority of the domains of materials and clean technology, electronics and communications and all nontherapeutic life, medical and human sciences and information technology. IP Group will also provide access to its relevant experts, business building expertise, mentoring, coaching and co-investing networks, recruitment and business support. UMIP's commercialisation process remains unchanged and University academics should contact their EPS-specific UMIP Commercialisation Executive to discuss any research which they feel has commercial potential. TECHNOLOGY PORTFOLIO The technology stemming from the research work at the University is broad, deep, and world class. UMIP acts as a bridge between industry and the Manchester academic community, managing and translating the technology from the laboratory to commercial application. Please see our technology portfolio brochure which lists our current licensing and spinout opportunities including details of where to obtain further information.
