DEVELOPMENTS INCLUDE
PLATFORMS TO AUTOMATE
GLOVE BOX OPERATIONS –
NO MORE HUMAN HANDS
Bringing robotics and AI technologies to the
nuclear industry requires the integration
of complex software and hardware
networks across various technologies.
The RAIN Hub has extensive experience
and understanding of the challenges of
integrating complex robotic systems.
Direct experience of remote maintenance
on JET, the world's largest operational
nuclear fusion plan, has given RAIN
partners expertise in inter-system
communication, coordinating robotics
with VR, sensing and operations
support technologies.
Progress within the RAIN Hub has led
to the development of a core software
framework. This can be used on even very
large robotic systems that will deform
significantly under their own weights
and the weight of their payloads. We are
also developing a platform for testing
technology that will lead to automated
glove box operations.
Glove boxes are used widely across the
nuclear industry for handling some of the
most dangerous materials. They have large
risks and challenges associated with them.
Providing integrated technological and
robotic support, to take human hands out
of gloves, would be transformative for the
nuclear industry.
