SUCCESS FOR UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER AT THE 2017 NORTHWEST BIONOW AWARDS Around 400 people from the Northwest's biomedical sector gathered on 30th November at the 16th Northwest Biomedical Awards at Mere Golf and Country Club, Cheshire. This prestigious awards dinner celebrates key achievements from companies and individuals who have made a significant contribution to the biomedical sector during 2017. University spin-out, Microbiosensor Ltd, which develops disposable point-of-care medical devices, won the Bionow Investment Deal of the Year following a recent £1.4M fundraising round. The deal transforms Microbiosensor from a University spin-out with solid grant funding to a venture-backed business with sufficient capital to CE mark and launch its two lead products. These products have the potential to impact major global medical device markets, and deliver healthcare benefits to vulnerable patient groups, together securing savings of up to £20M per year for each European national healthcare provider. Professor Curtis Dobson comments: "We were absolutely delighted to receive this prestigious award, which reflects the hard work of all those involved in completing this crucial financing deal for Microbiosensor, and the pivotal role the investment will play in the company bringing its products to market." University researchers, Professors Sheena Cruickshank's, John Mclaughlin's and Andy Brass' test for the management and assessment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease won Project of the Year Award. The test provides a non- invasive method to differentiate IBD from IBS Professor Curtis Dobson and Dr Gordon Barker Professors Sheena Cruickshank and John Mclaughlin UMIP HIGHLIGHTS
