The University of Manchester's world-class research base has an excellent track record of innovation. Our job at UMIP is to turn these innovative ideas into commercial reality. If you have a novel concept or invention that you think has real potential, we'd like to talk to you as early as possible. Assuming it meets our commercial assessment criteria, we may need to protect your idea with a patent. The patenting process has many stages, the completion of which can take up to five years. To show you the various patenting steps at a glance, we have produced here an overview of what needs to happen, how long it takes, what we do and what you need to do yourself. We hope you find it helpful. UMIP's role is to provide you with professional guidance and join forces with you to bring your ideas to life. Please get in touch with us – we'd love to hear from you.
