Manchester scientists develop
stem cell gene therapy for fatal
childhood disease ready for
human trial
University and Central Manchester University Hospital
NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT) researchers have
developed the pioneering approach for Sanfilippo
disease– a genetic condition for which there is currently
no effective treatment. Following a licence agreement
with Orchard Therapeutics, the scientists are working
with them to test the therapy in a human trial.

announced in September that NHSc is entering into
a staged, milestone-based acquisition of Phagenesis,
a medical device company that has developed a new
treatment for dysphagia.

University spin-out focusing on
Alzheimer's disease launches
in Manchester
New stem cell company, StrataStem, which is able
to study 'Alzheimer's disease in a dish', launched
in Manchester earlier this year. Spun-out of the
University by UMIP, StrataStem was founded by
Stem Cell Research Fellow, Dr Lisa Mohamet and
Dr Chris Ward, a Reader in Stem Cell Biology.
