As you usually own your IP, the
University needs your permission to
be able to use it in certain
circumstances. For instance, the
University may want to use extracts
from student works to promote the
University. To allow the University to
do this, the IP Policy provides that
all students give the University a
licence to use the IP they create in
the course of their studies, for
the University's administrative,
promotional, educational and
teaching purposes. For example, this
licence allows the University to place
your degree thesis or dissertation
in its Research Information
Management system,
PURE. Before
leaving the University, each student
must also deposit with the
University a copy of all materials
containing IP which they have
licensed to the University.
Case Study...
The University's Music Department
wants to promote its work using
music composed by its students. The
students own the copyright in their
music, but the University can use the
music for this promotional
purpose as it has a licence to do so.
It cannot sell downloads of the
music for commercial purposes.
