AGRICULTURE EDITION 39 ALLTECH | A lltech, based in Stamford, Lincolnshire, is committed to raising standards through education, innovation and the commercial use of nutrition and health technologies throughout the food chain, for the benefit of the animal, producer, consumer and environment, sustainably. The Korean concept of yak-shik-dong-won sees food and medicine as having the same origin. This concept highlights the value of functional foods for preventive and therapeutic health purposes. However, agriculture and nutrition are rarely thought of synonymously. Traditionally, human nutrition has been the sole preserve of healthcare professionals, but farmers are essential in providing diverse and nutritious foods – the foundation of good health. With a burgeoning global population, sustainable food production, dietary diversification and food quality are increasingly important. In applying a nutrition lens to agriculture, researchers, farmers, agronomists and animal nutritionists have the potential to close the gap between available foods and foods that are needed for optimal nutrition and health. What does Alltech provide? Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid, is an often overlooked essential nutrient. DHA is synthesised by algae and plankton, and is commonly found in fish oils. World production of fish oil is approximately 1 million tonnes, and caters predominantly for humans, aquaculture and pet food. However, with the demand from aquaculture set to jump, fish oil availability will decline while demand for DHA is increasing. Thus an alternative, sustainable supply of DHA is required – setting the stage for 'farmed algae'.
