AGRICULTURE EDITION 33 OPENFIELD AGRICULTURE | Openfield Agriculture O penfield is a business built on collaboration. With our cooperative structure, we strive to reward our members through strong relationships with end-user consumers, by helping them manage their market-price risk exposure and by not focusing on profit for Openfield, but on value return to our members and the grain stores and grain groups with whom we engage. Collaboration is fundamental to developing a supply chain that provides society with a safe and consistent product of known provenance produced in a manner in which we all approve. Without such collaboration, it is unlikely that society would get the products it wants produced in a way it deems acceptable. This is what Openfield seeks to deliver – a supply chain working together for the benefit of its partners and for society. Openfield markets grain on behalf of its farmer members, grain store cooperatives and other farming groups, as well as supplying seed and fertiliser. Our ambition is to secure strong relationships in the supply chain, bringing the farmer closer to the consumer. We are the largest supplier of grain into the free market in the UK, handling 4.5 million tonnes of UK-produced crops, with a significant export programme to Europe, North Africa, the USA and Saudi Arabia. We operate in commodities that have been subject to significant price, yield and quality volatility in recent years, and our aim is to minimise the risk exposure and to maximise the value for our members. Delivering this vision, however, is not without its challenges. UK agriculture has a mixed record when it comes to supporting its cooperatives.
