In November, we hosted Hazel Mathye from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg for a period of 2 weeks. Hazel wanted to visit to learn and explore the tools and processes that we currently implement at UMIP and it was also a great opportunity to build a relationship between our two offices and to share best practice. At her university, Hazel is an IP analyst and is involved in day-to- day operations supporting IP management and the commercialisation process by assisting with invention disclosure management, carrying out feasibility assessments, preliminary market analysis, patent searches and identifying commercial opportunities to facilitate business case development. Hazel met with team members from all our units: IP Development and Partnering, IP Services, Enterprise and Business Development, Marketing and Promotion and also our external partners. Hazel comments: "My time at UMIP provided me with an opportunity to get insight from individuals who have a track record of successfully commercializing University research. I will be taking back to South Africa with me all the Tech Transfer best practices that I received from UMIP and the networks that I built during my time here. I really appreciate all the efforts that Clare Arkwright and Mary Williams, did in putting together the programme, including all the social outings!" 14 TECH TRANSFER ACROSS CONTINENTS UMIC ® UMIP ® UMI 3 "Express IP" – IP-based, market-ready products that can be licensed "at scale". Most of the IP that UMIP helps to commercialise are patentable inventions. However there is a large untapped resource of copyright materials (software, text and images) and research materials within the University some examples of which are listed opposite. > Software – standalone software, apps, web-based tools and services. > Research Materials – small molecules, compound libraries, peptides, enzymes, catalysts, antibodies, cell lines, plasmids, transgenic animals, surgical models, etc. > Scientific Images – micrographs, illustrations, photographs – from any field of research. > Clinical Outcomes Assessments (COAs) – PROs, ClinROs, ObsROs etc. UMIP's aim is to connect your product with a customer or licensee as quickly and efficiently as possible. In some cases we will be able to licence your product to a distributor who will take care of sales and marketing activity in return for a share of any revenues – indeed we have already licensed software, PROs and research reagents in this way. However in many cases, for example to disseminate software to collaborators, a more direct route to market is required. Last February we launched Click2Go our online shop for Express IP. Click2Go acts as a shop window for your research outputs and fully automates licensing, payment and file downloads. We can also provide you with a full breakdown of who your customers are and which institutions or companies they work at. We can even screen prospective licensees before approving their requests. Click2Go now has 10 software and other copyright products available and we have concluded 50 licences and almost 800 sales since launch. Now we are looking to expand our software portfolio and add products in the Image categories. In other activity UMIP will be carrying out an audit of Clinical Outcomes Assessments (e.g. Patient Reported Outcomes or PROs) within the Faculties of Medical and Human Sciences and of Life Sciences throughout December and January. If you have developed Express IP that you would like to commercialise then please contact our IP Scouting Team. If you would like to know more about Express IP or Click2Go then please email express@umip.com or call Ed Maughfling 0161 606 7213. EXPRESS IP UPDATE
