The University has a number of ways of supporting those
who want to take control over their own careers from the
outset. There is a combination of formal and extra mural
support ranging from the Manchester Enterprise Centre's
(part of the Manchester Business School), cross-faculty
taught programmes and venture competitions, to the
support offered by UMIP to student entrepreneurs and the
Manchester Entrepreneurs Society itself.

through UMIP and the Manchester Enterprise Centre collaborate on developing enterprising
researchers, for example, helping the Doctoral Training Centre research students understand the potential
of developing commercial outcomes from their research through a combination of taught elements,
workshops and a competition for 'proof-of-principle' funding. There is also a UMIP Fellows programme
in which 2nd year PhD students work alongside commercialisation executives on projects such as market
identification. Each of these programmes is designed to provide research students with the experience
and understanding which can build the desire for a career in business rather than academic research.
