Phoenix Inspection Systems University helps Phoenix's ultrasound technology see off international competition 52 CORPORATE PARTNERSHIP Phoenix provides inspection equipment for the energy industry and is based in Warrington. It specialises in ultrasound for industrial inspection, a process which was pioneered by the nuclear industry – including the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority at Risley, Warrington, in Cheshire. From the mid-1970s spin-out companies from the inspection group at Risley were established, producing systems for ultrasonic inspection. In 1983 Phoenix was set up to produce small systems and ultrasonic probes along with distribution agreements for other test equipment. One such product was developed by the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) for identifying blockages, holes and corrosion in heat exchangers. This was initially built for the CEGB by a small company in southern England but licensed to Phoenix for wider distribution. This product has been subsequently developed by Phoenix through five generations for more demanding applications including block detection in vents and pressure relief streams for chemical and petrochemical plants. Acoustek ® is a patented technique that has been developed at the University for the detection of leakages and blockages in long lengths of gas-filled pipelines. The technology has already proven its value to the oil and gas industry, where it monitors pipelines to detect blockages and leaks up to 10km away.
