The development of Manchester's
strengths in corrosion evidence its
concern with the issues faced by industry
and an appetite to couple them with
research. These strengths are founded in
the formation of the Corrosion Protection
Centre by UMIST in response to the
Hoare Report in the early 1970s, which
drew attention to the costs of corrosion
to industry. This has the largest critical
mass of researchers in the UK and
couples applied research to more
fundamental underpinning disciplines.
