Arago was formed as a spin-out company in 2010 but its roots go back decades. One of the founders joined the University from the power-systems industry to do a PhD working in the high voltage (HV) laboratory, a facility which was opened in the late 1950s. At that time there was a national initiative to respond to the introduction of 400kV power lines by industry and the University responded with the foundation of the laboratories. By the early years of the 21st century there were few similar facilities in the country, which led to the signing of an agreement in 2003 with National Grid to refurbish the laboratories. These had remained open because of their critical mass and the courage of the University in maintaining what was by then a facility of national importance. The focii of the work are now both the electrical transmission and distribution networks. The relationship with National Grid has developed into a true collaboration and Arago was formed in part as an outcome of this long relationship. The National Grid funded a feasibility study and at the same time the University was approached by a materials company from Loughborough interested in using composites on overhead towers which needed help with the power systems engineering aspects – thus a triad was formed with complete complementarity: user demand, civil and structural engineering (the company) and power systems. Each had already recognised they needed the others. Arago was formed as a joint venture with EPL, the Loughborough-based company specialising in advanced materials. The University had therefore attracted a partner already experienced in taking novel solutions to market. Arago Technology University's unique facility allows Arago to take centre stage in the HV industry 18 UNIVERSITY SPIN-OUT/JOINT VENTURE The genesis of Arago lies in the type of chance conversation that arise in meetings of trusted collaborators. "Have you ever thought of plastic overhead line towers?" "No – why don't you go away and have a think about it?" This led to the company's commercial focus.
