Chart illustrates the factors that influenced 2-DTech/Versarien The "variable quality" of graphene available in the market from a few small companies before the University spun out 2-DTech would have placed any commercial investment decisions on a potentially unsound footing as a result of rather fragile research conclusions. As a result of seizing this opportunity, the company is now approaching revenues from the supply of fully characterised graphene to a number of global players in markets such as Japanese electronics manufacturers and the Formula 1 industry. The company still carries out this business but has shifted its focus to take advantage of the scientific lead that its "dowry" from the University provided and which it has subsequently developed to create a higher added value business. The company is now developing IP in the means of production of graphene, not only refining the existing techniques but also developing new techniques for new applications. The relationship with Versarien will enable these manufacturing activities to be scaled up and in particular the use in structural composites with other materials, energy generation and storage and sensors to be exploited.
