75 In Place of War (www.inplaceofwar.net) demonstrates the international and cross-cultural links of the University, the city and academic entrepreneurialism. It grew out of the TiPP centre; links were developed with UNICEF which led to developing training using theatre with young people affected by violence. Through this the University learnt about theatrical activity in conflict zones in Sri Lanka, and this in turn led to the start of a major project linking artists together in different war zones – a geographical rather than historical perspective on how artists respond to conflict in their own society. It has brought artists together to work on how their work can be validated and represented - into Manchester working with refugee communities through the Exodus project (see overleaf), in the Congo and in Kosovo. "The University in Manchester is an obvious hub for activity and innovation. The effect of 38,000 cosmopolitan, highly educated people concentrated around the University has great value and impact. To have the equivalent impact as a contributor to the city in London any university would have to have 500,000 students. But Manchester feels the right size."
