Social enterprise features in entrepreneurship development in a number of ways. 'Unconvention' was started with help from an innovation award (see page 68), one of a series made by UMIP, while Givemetap is a social enterprise (see page 76) assisted by Manchester Entrepreneurs. Support for researchers wishing to spin out their own social enterprise is an important topic of collaboration between the Enterprise Centre and UMIP. We also interviewed James Thompson, Professor of Applied and Social Theatre at the University and Director of social enterprise, In Place of War. We have presented this interview here, verbatim, because his personal view of Manchester's innovation system – both the place and the University's role – reinforce the vibrancy of the 'Mancunian Milieu'. Q: Manchester has a mix of cultures and is an attractive place for people to stay. What is it about Manchester that attracts people and makes talented people want to stay? JT 'Manchester Made Me' is one of the University's key brand values – people can be cynical about marketing but this one chimed with students, ex-students and natives in focus groups. Social Enterprise DEVELOPING TALENT 74 'Manchester made me, too' There is something about the place which makes people think that it was the total city that influenced their development. It's partly the University but includes the fact that people seem to consume the whole city. There is something about the scale - it's compact enough that you can make yourself known but it's also big enough and well networked and connected to have a mix of talent to find everyone and everything you need. The University's programme delivery team of UMIP and Manchester Enterprise Centre (MEC) were recognised for their work in supporting and developing social enterprise innovation at the University by winning the 'Outstanding HEI Supporting Social Entrepreneurship Award' at the 2013 UnLtd National Conference.
