71 In 2013 the winning team of the £10 challenge increased the original stake by a factor of 10. 'Buildathons' are resourced by a mixture of the core society team and external experts or alumni from the relevant discipline. The University has a number of ways of supporting those who want to take control over their own careers from the outset. There is a combination of formal and extra mural support ranging from the Manchester Enterprise Centre's (part of the Manchester Business School), cross-faculty taught programmes and venture competitions, to the support offered by UMIP to student entrepreneurs and the Manchester Entrepreneurs Society itself. Our success: Enterpreneurial students from the University celebrate at the Venture Further 2013 Awards UMI 3 through UMIP and the Manchester Enterprise Centre collaborate on developing enterprising researchers, for example, helping the Doctoral Training Centre research students understand the potential of developing commercial outcomes from their research through a combination of taught elements, workshops and a competition for 'proof-of-principle' funding. There is also a UMIP Fellows programme in which 2nd year PhD students work alongside commercialisation executives on projects such as market identification. Each of these programmes is designed to provide research students with the experience and understanding which can build the desire for a career in business rather than academic research.
