Student Enterprise 70 DEVELOPING TALENT The University and the world of work: developing and retaining talent Fitting students and graduates for the challenges of choosing and developing a career – whether under their own control as an entrepreneur or as part of the many growing companies in the area – is a key part of the University's offer and of its contribution to the development of the economy and the creation of wealth. One example is MGIP – the Manchester Graduate Internship Programme. This offers paid placements of from four to 12 months, typically with a local small or medium-sized company (SME) and is organised by the careers service. The programme acts as a launchpad for those University graduates who want to stay in the area, get experience with an SME or who are looking to use their skills and expertise developed at the University to make a real impact. The success of the scheme – and the developing appetite for the University's graduates – can be seen from the way the statistics have developed since its inception in 2008 (see graph left). UMI 3 , through UMIP, provides support for students and graduates with ideas to start digital companies in the form of space, mentoring and intensive workshops through its digital accelerator, IQuBit. The most recent workshop saw 20 students compete for a place within this facility. UMI 3 is also keen to organise 'grand challenges' which enable students to compete for business with local companies with procurement needs, which they can then satisfy either as interns or independent contractors. 50 100 150 2008 2009 2010 2011 ■ Interns placed ■ Recruited by SME ■ Recruited by other 0
