61 Siemens has a long-standing global programme of engagement with leading universities and research institutions focused on bringing together the best minds for talent development and innovation. Manchester and Cambridge Universities were the first two UK institutions to be awarded Siemens' Global Ambassador Status, in recognition of the wide-ranging research collaborations across business sectors and also the efforts of these two universities to engage graduate talent with Siemens. Siemens at Congleton obtained its privileged status largely down to the experience it had of working with both constituent universities plus the fact that it had recruited a key academic who had studied at each university and had been recommended by a previous supervisor to assist with the final stages of development of a lower volume product. Before going to postgraduate study at UMIST he had been at Ferranti and continued to work closely with them on chip design while carrying out research at the University until he joined Siemens in the late 1980s. Siemens is now developing its relationship with the University on a more strategic basis. This is because of a combination of proximity, which leads to the company knowing more about the University, and down to personal contacts. The growing international standing of the University, its leading-edge research and its engineering talent have combined to gain the necessary recognition in Munich, Siemens' home city.
