CASE STUDY MANCHESTER MUSIC MAP Mapping Manchester's Music Legacy projects run by the Institute for Cultural Practices, where Kate is studying for an MA Arts Management. Kate also wanted to draw on the rich resources offered by the City's archive organisations such as MDMA, Band on The Wall and City Archives but this was a tall order and the project needed focus to get off the ground. Earlier this month, we interviewed Kate CampbellPayne, a social entrepreneur from the School of Arts, Languages and Culture in the Faculty of Humanities, whose Manchester Music Map is charting the history of Manchester's music scene. We wanted to find out more about how she brought her unique project to life. "Mapping was a concept that really fascinated me and I was inspired to create a map about two things I am passionate about, music and Manchester. The city is home to many great bands such as Joy Division, Oasis, and the Stone Roses and to show that rich history, I created the map as a resource to locate key locations and bring them to life with videos." The original concept was to create a collaborative mapping system which would capture information from cultural organisations such as museums, galleries and music venues. The mapping methods had been developed by a number of In 2012, Kate and her MA supervisor Dr. Abigail Gilmore won a £5,000 award in UMI3's Social Enterprise Competition, which helped build the site. The competition introduced Kate to Steven Flower, a freelance project manager who worked with open data systems. "Steven's input was fantastic as he was able to help me focus the project into something realistic and achievable. He suggested we curate content from YouTube as it is readily available, easy to access and a method which a lot of people already use to find out about music, new and old. This meant we could make a really good start in populating the map." Having mapped landmark locations such as the Hacienda Building, Salford Lad's Club and the Free Trade Hall, the team were able to upload video footage of gigs, interviews and events. The web app also includes submission form so that everyone can make their own recommendations about what Manchester music they want to see on the map. Social media has helped to spread the word and Kate is now building up a diverse community of users who are helping to add content. Her vision is for people to engage with the site so she can start to capture their experiences, memories and personal insights, vital historical recollections which so easily get lost over time. Kate continued: "The support from UMI3 has been invaluable, not just financially but by providing me with access to a network of experts as well as giving support and encouragement every step of the way. The project helps to support the University's outreach programme, engaging with the wider public and challenging the way in which we think about things. "My advice to anyone thinking of being a social entrepreneur would be to take a leap of faith with your idea but be flexible around your original vision. Allow your concept to evolve and be shaped by the guidance you receive." www.manchestermusicmap.co.uk 9
