CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER'S STOCK TAKE REPORT, 2004 – 2013 Our ambitions, our targets, our achievements... 2013 was a very challenging year for us, we made a number of organisational changes to make our business model more effective; we introduced more services, such as supporting social enterprises and student start-ups; and we coped well with a continuing difficult economic climate for investing. A notable milestone was the successful completion of the UMIP Premier Fund's investment phase; and a complementary new arrangement with the IP Group was successfully launched, which will provide proof-of-principle funding for our spin-outs for the next 5 years. Overall we managed our finances to plan, such that we have made a profit this year and we have made a total gift aid sum of over £500K to the University over the last few years, having broken-even on budget, which is our goal, in other years since 2004. Our Key Performance Indicator measures are close to-plan since our establishment, so we continue to perform at the right level in order to meet our July 2015 mission, goals and targets that were set for us in Aug/Oct 2004 (and of course in a way that ensures that the business is well set-up for the 5 year plan period beyond 2015, ie to July 2020). We have been successful again in receiving and assessing a high number of invention disclosures (nearly 400 in 2013) and winning funding for over 40 new IP projects (representing almost £11M of seed funding) and which started work in the year. The merit of our spin-outs' potential has again been recognised by continued high levels of third party investments into the spin-outs (over £25M in the year) and our annual licensing revenue was sustained - at just over £1M. Our Innovation Centre has been busy both hosting events and conferences and welcoming new tenant companies to our facilities. We have made significant progress in increasing the energy efficiency of our buildings and have seen a 50% improvement in our CRC league table ranking this year. This last year, we have initiated a new number of business lines, such as student enterprises and social enterprises, for which we will be developing targets so as to be able to measure our impact and progress in these areas. Of course, every good company performance relies upon its people for success and I thank every colleague for the effort and commitment demonstrated to the University's intellectual property activities. Mr Clive Rowland
