OUR GOALS UMIP GOAL ONE: VENTURING To establish the scale and quality of the University's intellectual property (IP) venturing activities such that the University becomes a world-class benchmark for the management, practice and performance of commercialising academic IP outputs through spin-out companies. Principal Strategies a) Developing creative and novel ways of working; b) Assisting academics with identifying relevant translational grants and constructing compelling bids; c) Developing and executing first-class asset management plans; d) Deploying effective IP venture prospecting resources and expertise within the University; Target By 2015, to be regarded as one of the top universities for spin-out company commercialisation as measured by appropriate and calibrated benchmarking; published surveys and independent reports and quality citations, corresponding with the University's world rankings in research and teaching. e) Working closely with experienced corporate advisers and with seed investors; f) Adopting a pro-active and co-operative approach with existing and potential University creators of IP; g) Having an IP Policy which is positive towards staff engaging in spin-out company activities and rewarding them more generously than any other university. KPIs 1. Continuous improvement in total third party investment in University spin-out companies, as measured through a three year rolling average; 2. Continuous year-on-year increase in value of IP and translational grants placed with the University to develop and/or enhance spin-out companies; 3. A year-on-year increase in the number of spin-out companies based upon breakthrough platform level IP assigned by the University; 4. Annual material cash realisations of shareholdings; 5. Annual key events such as stock market listings, trade sales, major contracts concluded by spin-outs; 6. Continuous year-on-year improvement in the number of grants and other non-investment funding secured by the University's spin-out companies and accolades received by them. 12 Developing creative and novel ways of working
