HUMAN ROBOT INTERACTION Lead: Sandor Veres, University of Sheffield The impact of robotic and AI technology will be in part determined by how easy it is for the operators to interact with. RAIN research in Human Robot Interaction (HRI) focusses on teleoperation, variable autonomy, communication interfaces and operator training. We strive towards a future in which operators can control robotic systems comfortably and intuitively in a safe environment. KEY PROGRESS • Augmented reality tele-operation system, controlled using bare hands, has been developed and demonstrated to Sellafield. • Integration of robot visualisation with manipulation capabilities. • Safe control of robot arm movements is being ensured by developing robust boundaries on state trajectories despite sensory uncertainty. • Created a framework that can combine knowledge from an operator and robot to inform the interface. • Developed course material for operator training on how to reconfigure robot interaction system for different jobs. 16
