THE UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER The Manchester team is led by RAIN director Barry Lennox, head of the Robotics for Extreme Environments group. In addition to vast experience developing robotic platforms for nuclear applications, Manchester brings in expertise from the departments of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering (MACE), Physics, and Computer Science, and collaborative links with the Dalton Nuclear Institute. THE UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL) is the most comprehensive academic centre for multi-disciplinary robotics research in the UK. Tom Scott, RAIN lead at Bristol, has a wealth of experience in nuclear research. Bristol brings expertise in radiation sensors, UAV's and mobile platforms. THE UNIVERSITY OF LANCASTER The RAIN team at Lancaster is led by Malcolm Joyce and specialises in nuclear instrumentation and sensing. Lancaster's close proximity to Sellafield and the Cumbrian nuclear industry has placed them in an internationally prominent position in nuclear engineering systems. THE UNIVERSITY OF LIVERPOOL Michael Fisher leads the Liverpool team from the Autonomy and Verification Lab. Liverpool brings expertise in the verification and validation of autonomous systems. In addition to being relevant for nuclear robotics, this research is hugely important across all industries that currently, or will, use autonomous technologies. THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM Working with Rolls-Royce, the RAIN team at Nottingham focuses on robot design for hard-to-reach environments, such as aeroengines. Dragos Axinte and his team develop and build robots for in-situ inspection and repair of large and complex equipment. They bring expertise in snake arms, tooling and hexapod design. THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD The Oxford Robotics Institute (ORI) is a world leading centre for research in robot navigation with an ambitious, application-driven research agenda. Ioannis Havoutis from the Dynamic Robot Systems Group (DRS) leads the Oxford RAIN team. They focus on state estimation, navigation, motion planning and control for dynamic robots. THE UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD The Sheffield RAIN team is led by Sandor Veres from the department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering (ACSE). ACSE specialises in control science for intelligent robot arms and rovers, particularly in autonomous decision making. They bring experience in handling and sorting nuclear waste autonomously. REMOTE APPLICATIONS IN CHALLENGING ENVIRONMENTS (RACE) RACE is part of the UK Atomic Energy Authority, specialising in design-to- deployment of advanced control systems and robotic solutions. Led by Rob Buckingham, the RACE team contributes unique expertise of working with current fission and future fusion robotics challenges – leading and collaborating on national and international projects. 11
