Recap SCENARIOS Recap So, we have looked at the rights and wrongs of the actions taken so far by Ian Table, Clara Kent, Tom Doyle, Emily Wynott and Brian Hodgson. In doing this, we have analysed the types of IP that the individuals have created and where ownership of such IP might lie. The moral of the story is that you need to do your homework before you embark on projects such as Emily's pursuit of an alternative therapy treatment for breast cancer. Without the right protection in place and without knowing what you can and cannot do with the IP that you have either created and/or are using, you risk: n allowing third parties to take advantage of your efforts; n losing any registered protection you might be able to get for your work; n being pursued by third parties for infringement of their IP. If in doubt, speak to your supervisor and/or the relevant person at your IP commercialisation organisation. 16
