6TH YEAR OF UMIP FELLOWS CELEBRATES 350 PROJECTS AND COUNTING! Now in its sixth year the UMIP Fellows programme continues to provide a valuable resource support to UMIP Commercialisation Executives in assessing which projects to commercialise. At the same time, it gives a unique opportunity for full-time postgraduate students registered at the University to gain in-depth experience in technology commercialisation activities. Fellows are recruited from across the University and mainly work with our Commercialisation Executives on a part-time paid basis. The scheme has involved over 52 Fellows with over 350 assignments completed and is continuing to show real evidence of business benefits to UMIP, improved services to inventors in the University, and skills enhancements for the students, confirming a positive role for the scheme. Six new Fellows have actively engaged in the scheme and many of the former Fellows have started careers in venture capital, patent law and other careers where they can exploit the combination of their science and technology qualifications with commercial experience gained from the scheme. One of this year's departing Fellows Iwan Vaughan Roberts, a PhD Student on the CDT in Regenerative Medicine, said: "The Fellows programme allowed me the opportunity to research and evaluate exciting technologies from the breadth of research across the University. It was great to apply critical thinking skills to areas beyond my own research and integrate the skills gained with my other entrepreneurial activities including the Innovation Forum."
