CASE STUDY: CARMA 2 Carma 2 is the next generation autonomous robotic monitoring system designed for the nuclear industry. Developed in collaboration with Sellafield, it maps and continuously inspects floor space for radioactive contamination. Using the latest robust robotic technologies, the system integrates the Clearpath Jackal platform with industry standard sensors and state of the art mapping and simultaneous localisation technologies. Carma 1 was successfully trialled on site. The more robust Carma 2 model is being developed by RAIN with a view to it being deployed routinely at Sellafield and other nuclear sites. Across the RAIN Hub, we are developing and extending a set of mapping and reconstruction approaches that are able to fuse different sensing modalities. These will be used for exploration, map building, navigation and detecting subtle changes in the environment. The CARMA2 can scan a floor surface and highlight the contaminated areas in red. 9
